Fort Larned

Fort Larned is on the Santa Fe Trail, positioned between Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and Fort Lyon, Colorado. Originally founded in 1859, the existing buildings date from about 1868 when 200 to 250 soldiers were stationed at the Fort. This military contingent provided protection for mail coaches, freighters and other traffic on the Santa Fe Trail. The Santa Fe Railroad completed construction across Kansas in 1872, ending the military requirement. Fort Larned is one of the only preserved frontier forts from this time period. It is now a National Historic Site as part of the National Park Service. To learn more, visit the Fort Larned website
